1. Initialising your calculator
To start setting the calculator to the default course settings, turn on the calculator and then enter the following two key sequences:
(CLR) (Setup) (Yes)
(SETUP)
(Norm)
Be aware that in the second key sequence, "CLR" (which is short for 'clear') is the second purpose on the
key, and 'Setup' is it's name for an on-screen menu option that corresponds to that
key. "Yes" is the name of the on-screen menu option corresponding to the
key. This key sequence clears the previous settings in the calculator.

Be aware of the difference between 'SETUP', which is the secondary function for the

Your calculator will now be working in Math mode as well as the term Math is displayed on the right-hand side of the high-end of the calculator display as shown in Figure 4 below. The Math Mode is the preferred method of using your calculator throughout this course since it lets mathematics be filled in and displayed in a similar way to how you would write it on paper.Figure 4 : Math mode
1.1 Basic calculations
Basic calculations are input to the calculator in exactly the same sequence as when they are written on paper, as shown in the next exercise. The calculator will display the calculation that you enter. When you press
, the answer is displayed in the lower right corner of the screen.

You may have noticed that in the fourth part (4) of previous task it was apparent that there was a problem with the calculation was too long to fit on the calculator display. In such circumstances there are symbols like '

The cursor will flash a symbol indicating what the next input in the calculator will show up.
1.2 Fractions or decimals?
Within Activity 1 you set up your calculator to work in Math mode. When in this mode the result of an calculation is not a complete number, it will be shown as a fraction like
the case where it is possible.
For the answer to be displayed in decimal format, you'll need hold

the key, or you can switch between decimal and fractional outputs with your
keys.
Be aware that the calculator is in Math mode if Math is visible at very top of the calculator display. If your calculator is not operating in Math mode, repeat the steps in Activity 1.

1.3 Powers
There are numerous keyboards in the calculatorthat allow users to do calculations involving powers. For smaller powers, such as cubes and squares, there are special buttons

1.4 Making corrections
If you've made mistakes when entering a key sequence in the calculator You can utilize the editing features to correct the error.

Other types of calculator errors you might be faced with include:
- 'Math Error', when the calculation you entered has mathematical logic, but the result is not able to be calculated, like trying division by zero, or when the outcome is too large enough for the calculator to manage.
- "Stack Error", if your calculation is too complicated to be completed in one go - in such situations, try breaking the calculation into a number of simpler ones.
Section 4 considers how you can accomplish this.
In these situations when this happens, the calculator will display the same display as to the Syntax Error, allowing you to either abandon or change your calculation.
